Provence is a stunning region in the South East of France that lies next to Italy and kisses the Mediterranean sea. It is known for the French Riviera, where the rich and famous flock to each year. Provence has sunny weather, beautiful countryside, food, wine and plenty of history! Throughout history, many artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso found inspirations in this colourful land. This is definitely a must see, as it is a region full of romance, art, mouthwatering cuisine and endless lavender fields. Check out the best activities to do in Provence below!
1. Wine Tasting & Vineyard Tours
You must indulge in the local produce while in Provence. A vineyard and wine tasting tour is an amazing and educational way to experience the local gastronomy, while enjoying perfectly paired wines. The area called Luberon has been growing vines here since Roman times, and the soil and climate is perfect to create the best taste. An extra fun way to tour the vineyards is by bicycle. Feel the summer air as you cycle through vineyards and orchards of cherries and apricots. You can even have an electric bike so it’s not as strenuous for those who enjoy a slower pace.
2. History
Provence is teeming with history everywhere you look. A few must-sees are the Roman aqueduct in Pont du Gard, outside Avignon. The Romans built this stunning landmark to carry water. The water is refreshing, perfect for a dip and a picnic on the river bank. For a two-in-one day trip – visit Senanque Abbey in the early summer to see the building and the bloom of lavender that covers the fields in calming colour. For those who love great literary works, visit the imposing fortress off the coast of Marseille. It was where the hero in “The Count of Monte Cristo” was imprisoned and in real life it actually was a prison in the 18th century.
3. The Verdon Gorges
A stunning river canyon is over 25km long and very deep with some areas being deeper than 700m. You can drive along the top (which is not for the faint of heart), climb the sides, kayak through or hike. It is an ideal spot for those who love outdoor adventures. The canyon leads to an artificial lake on Sainte-Croix, which is divine for a picnic with baguettes, cheese and any other tasty treats you can find in your local delicatessen.
4. Road Trip
Enjoy the scenery and explore by car (even better if it’s a convertible) the small towns dotted along the coast. For example the old fishing district of Cannes – Le Suquet. A stunning town with small streets, grand homes and panoramic views. Another village in the old fishing district of St Tropez – La Ponche. It maintains the charm of its little fishing village roots. It’s the oldest part of town and a perfect place to enjoy a stroll along the beach or around town.
5. Telepherique du mont Faron, Toulon
For those who love to feel like a bird, the cable car ride up Mount Faron in Toulon is the perfect way to appreciate the local scenery. The only cable car in the region; it takes you up to 584 m above sea level. At the top there is a small zoo, chapel and a couple of places to stop for lunch.
